AnythingLLM vs. Ollama vs. GPT4All: Which Is the Better LLM to Run Locally?

AnythingLLM

One of the advantages of running AnythingLLM locally on your Windows, Mac, or even Raspberry Pi is that it is customizable. Hence, the exact requirement will determine what customization you employ. However, the table below should give you a rough estimate of the minimum standards.

Ollama

GPT4All

Its system requirements are similar to those of Ollama. You can run it locally on macOS, Linux, or Windows. Below, we give a breakdown.

3. Ease of Installation and Setup

While installation may vary by operating system, GPT4All typically requires an installer. The Windows, Mac, and Linux installers are available on the official website. Once you run the installer, you must download a Language Model to interact with the AI.

This is the same process for Ollama; however, AnythingLLM may have a slightly varied step. So, you must download and install the installation package needed for your operating system, select your preferred LLM, create your workspace, import local docs, and start chatting with the docs.

While all three are straightforward installation and setup processes, AnythingLLM may require extra steps.

4. Community and Support

AnythingLLM

Of the three LLMs we are exploring, AnythingLLM has the smallest community. Its community is primarily Github-based and focuses on discussions of project development and more technical aspects. It is active but may not be the best if you seek general support and troubleshooting.

Ollama

Although the Ollama community is smaller than GPT4All, it is active and larger than AnthingLLM. Its community is also centered around GitHub, where you can contribute to projects, discuss features, or share your experiences. You will also get a lot of technical help from GitHub.

Official support is limited, like with AnythingLLM, and this may cause some friction as you do not have extensive dedicated support.

GPT4All

You do not get a centralized official community on GPT4All, but it has a much bigger GitHub presence. You will also love following it on Reddit and Discord. That aside, support is similar to Ollama and AnythingLLM.

5. Performance

LLM performance running locally often depends on your hardware specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM), model size, and specific implementation details. This is one of the elements where it is hard to tell any of the models apart.

GPT4All offers options for different hardware setups, Ollama provides tools for efficient deployment, and AnythingLLM’s specific performance characteristics can depend on the user’s hardware and software environment.

We ran all models on a Windows 11 computer with the following specifications:

  • RAM: 16GB (15.7 GB usable)
  • Processor: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz 2.80GHz

They all offered competitive performance, and we did not notice lags and delays running the models.

6. Integration

AnythingLLM

AnythingLLM offers several integration possibilities, including cloud integration with OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, and Anthropic’s Claude V2. It also has growing community support for local LLMs like Hugging Face. However, you do not get much custom LLM support.

AnythingLLM comes with Lance DB integration by default, which is its default vector database. However, you may integrate third-party options, such as Pinecone, Chroma, or Quadrant, for specific features.

AnythingLLM lets you build and integrate your custom agents to extend its functionality.

Ollama

Ollama allows direct interaction via the terminal using simple commands. The Ollama Python library can be used for programmatic interaction, allowing you to interact with other Python applications. Additionally, you can use the REST API to integrate with other services.

Ollama also allows integration with other frameworks like LangChain, Home Assistant, Haystack, and Jan.ai.

GPT4All

With GPT4All, you have direct integration into your Python applications using Python bindings, allowing you to interact programmatically with models. You also have a Command Line Interface (CLI) for basic interaction with the model. GPT4All is flexible and lets you integrate into custom applications.

7. Use Cases and Applications

AnythingLLM is excellent for custom AI assistants, knowledge-intensive applications that require large data, and enterprise-level applications.

Ollama is useful for personal AI assistants for writing, summarizing, or translating tasks. It can also be applied in educational applications, offline data analysis and processing, and low-latency application development.

GPT4All is well-suited for AI experimentation and model development. It is also suitable for building open-source AI or privacy-focused applications with localized data.
