Instagram is constantly receiving new updates. While this is beneficial for the app, there are times when updates introduce problems. Common problems include being unable to add a post to your Story.
Many users are frustrated as they want to share more content in their Stories, but that doesn’t have to end your posting career. Below are the reasons this happens and methods to fix it. Read on for all the details.
Add Post to Your Story Missing on Instagram
There are several reasons why some users can’t add a post to their Stories. Besides having an outdated app, Instagram is also testing the “Reshare” sticker, which effectively replaces the older feature.
Outdated App
Attempting to use an outdated Instagram app may result in glitches. If you’re on iOS, go to the Apple App Store and update your app manually. The same goes for Android users, though they’ll use the Google Play Store instead.
- Open the Apple App Store.
- Go to the Profile icon at the top-right corner.
- Look for Instagram.
- Select the button to update the app.
- Wait for the update to complete and test Instagram again.
Android users should use these steps instead.
- Go to the Google Play Store.
- Head to the “Apps” menu.
- Look for Instagram on the list using the search bar.
- Update the app.
- Try to share posts to your Story now.
Sometimes that’s all it takes for the add post to Stories feature to return. If not, there are other reasons.
It’s Replaced
Some Instagram users in specific countries have the button replaced by the “Reshare” sticker. This effectively creates a new process for sharing the post. Here’s how it’s done.
- Open Instagram on your mobile device.
- Tap on your Instagram profile picture at the bottom-right corner.
- Select “Create (Plus icon)” on top of your screen.
- Look for the “Reshare” sticker. Tap on it and pick the post to share. Pick “Share” to add the post to your Story.
Currently, Instagram hasn’t clarified if the Reshare sticker is meant to entirely replace the old “Add Post To Your Story” option. The sticker is still being tested extensively, so users can only wait for more information. In the meantime, the sticker does make sharing straightforward.
Keep in mind that U.S. Instagram users have access to the Reshare sticker.
The Function Was Hidden
This occurrence will sometimes happen to people who rarely add posts to their Stories. In this case, Instagram moves the button to the bottom of your sharing list. Usually, it will be the first option you see.
- Click on the airplane or arrow icon under the post you want to share.
- Scroll down your sharing list. Find the option to “Add posts to your Story.”
- Confirm your choice and share.
It would be best to use it more to prevent the feature from being hidden like this. That way, Instagram will place it at the top of your list.
Reinstall Instagram
Corrupted app data may not be fixed just by updating the Instagram app. You should uninstall Instagram from your device if common fixes don’t work. It’s not guaranteed to fix the feature issue, but reinstalling an app can fix many things. Follow the steps below if you’re an Apple user.
- Tap and hold the Instagram app for several seconds.
- Pick the “Remove app” option from the pop-up menu.
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Instagram.
- Download the app again. Log in and check if everything is working fine.
These are the instructions for Android users.
- Go to the Google Play Store.
- Navigate to the “Apps” menu.
- Search for Instagram.
- Select the option to uninstall it.
- Install it again. Enter your credentials and test the feature.
Some Android devices also have the option to uninstall without using Google Play Store. However, we recommend using it as you can immediately reinstall Instagram without leaving the app.
Reinstalling works because you remove the cached data when doing so. Since these files may be corrupted, replacing them with new copies should remove any possibility of bugs and glitches.
Try Another Device
Sometimes it’s the device’s fault, and no one knows precisely why. Unfortunately, this means you have to use another person’s phone to try the feature. The benefit is that you can tell if it’s not just your broken Instagram account.
Should your device have an issue, consider sending a support ticket to Instagram’s customer service. They may be able to help you.
The Poster Doesn’t Allow for Sharing
If the post’s author disabled resharing to Stories, you wouldn’t be able to do that no matter how hard you try. The only way to fix this is to ask nicely. If the person agrees, they can enable the resharing to Stories function for you.
- Go to your Instagram profile at the bottom-right corner and select the menu.
- Look for “Settings” and enter.
- Head to the “Privacy” section and pick “Story.
” - Scroll down and enable “Resharing To Stories.”
- Now, the posts can be shared until the author disables the feature again.
Politely asking the post’s author tends to work out if they’re willing to enable the feature. Sadly, not everyone might agree, so you can only move on to a different post.
Switch Your Account Mode
Some people report that switching from private to public and vice versa sometimes brings the option for adding posts to Stories back. This procedure takes seconds at most and should be tried out just in case it works.
- Go to your Instagram profile page at the bottom-right corner.
- Navigate to the menu and go to the Settings menu.
- Scroll to “Privacy” and toggle your account mode. Test if the resharing function has returned.
Weirdly, that’s all it takes sometimes. The privacy modes may have caused a bug, and switching back and forth makes it go away. However, even today, no one is sure why the resharing feature is this problematic.
Clear the Caches
iOS devices have lost the ability to clear caches without uninstalling, but Android phones still have this feature. This is more convenient than a full uninstall as you retain the app.
Every phone is different, but here are some general steps that might help.
- Open your mobile device’s settings.
- Go to the Apps section.
- Look for Instagram.
- Select the option to clear the app’s cache. Try the app again.
Some mobile devices immediately let you head to the app’s settings with a long press. Cleared cache files tend to fix bugs as the corrupted parts are all removed.
A bonus to clearing your caches is faster loading times. Caches help boost app performance, but too many files can result in the opposite.
