When playing video games on a PC, it’s not uncommon to receive error messages, and Roblox is no different. One of the most-encountered errors is Code 279, which usually results from a poor internet connection, developer error, or firewall issues.
The good news is that the community has long been aware of the causes and has come up with some solutions. If you just got Error Code 279, there’s no need to worry. Read on to learn how to address it.
The Causes for Error Code 279 in Roblox
Error Code 279 occurs when something has prevented you from connecting to the game server. This is often a case of internet blockage, and there are a few reasons why this can happen, ranging from internet issues to developer errors and firewall blocks.
Poor Internet Connection
If your internet service provider (ISP) is having issues, or if something is happening to the network in your area, the connection speeds may drop. Your home may also be a poor location for internet connectivity. Low bandwidth can be a common culprit, which prevents many games from being played smoothly.
Roblox is the same. If your connection to the game’s servers is spotty, there’s a chance you won’t be able to connect. It will display (ID=17: Connection Attempt Failed) (Error Code 279)
as a result.
Developer Error
Roblox Experiences can receive periodic updates from its developers, but as with all games, there are glitches and bugs. Sometimes, a new update can introduce glitches that prevent connection or cause other problems. If this is the case, it’s not your internet connection that’s a problem, but the Experience.
You can test for this possibility by launching several Experiences you enjoy. If many of them still let you connect, the developer probably messed up somewhere in the coding process.
Firewall Issues
Windows Firewall is a zealous app that protects you from harm. However, it’s been known to block games for decades now, due to not recognizing certain titles as harmless software. You can disable your firewall or adjust the settings so the game isn’t stopped.
The firewall blocking a game prevents it from sending signals to the server, so you can’t play it. That’s why firewalls can be a hassle when playing games. This cause isn’t as prevalent today as it once was. Firewalls are now less prone to misidentifying software.
Fixing Error Code 279
Since we now know why Error Code 279 can occur, it’s time to delve into the solutions. These may help you play Roblox again, but if not, we recommend contacting customer support for assistance. You can also restart your PC, which sometimes is the cure for unknown problems.
Restart Your Router
If your internet connection is unusually slow, you can power cycle your router and perhaps solve the issue. Here’s how it’s done.
- Unplug your modem and internet router from the power socket.
- Wait 15 seconds.
- Plug the modem back into the socket and wait for a minute or two.
- Turn the router on.
- Wait for the modem’s lights to become green.
- Connect your computer to the network and test to see if Roblox gives you the error again.
If you suspect someone else is using your network without asking, you should reset the password. Other times, someone in the house may be downloading a large file and your internet bandwidth isn’t strong enough to accommodate large downloads and gaming simultaneously. In this case, you should wait for the download to finish.
Other ways to boost your internet connection are to use an Ethernet cable and/or get a faster package. There should also be no objects between your computer and modem if you’re using Wi-Fi.
Disable or Configure the Firewall
If your firewall is the main culprit, changing the settings has usually worked for those trying to unblock games. It may be a good idea to give it a try.
- Open the Windows Start Menu.
- In the search bar, type “Windows Defender Firewall.”
- Look for and click on “Turn Windows Defender Firewall On/Off.”
- Make sure the option to turn the firewall off is checked on private and public networks.
- Click “OK.”
- Test and see if Roblox is working.
If you don’t want to turn the firewall off, you can set it to allow Roblox through.
- Go to the Windows Settings menu.
- Look for “Windows Defender Firewall.”
- Navigate to “Allow An App Or Feature Through Windows Defender Firewall.”
- Search for Roblox and let it through by checking the box.
You can configure the game to be allowed through private or public networks.
Use a Different Browser
The web version of Roblox can’t be played on all browsers, so we recommend using supported ones like those in this list.
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
- Safari
- Opera
- Internet Explorer
Microsoft Edge may work for some, but players have reported errors. We also recommend updating your browser version, as older builds can cause bugs and problems.
In the past, Roblox could only be played on a special browser, but those days are over. It was a clunky experience and could only load the Roblox website. You couldn’t even type in the URL bar to go elsewhere.
While not officially mentioned, these browsers can also support Roblox.
- Opera GX
- Brave Browser
- Vivaldi Browser
- UR Browser
These browsers may have built-in VPNs, letting you stay anonymous on the internet. If your browser isn’t on this list, you can test it to see if Roblox loads.
Disable Browser Add-Ons
Third-party add-ons, like AdBlocker, can sometimes interfere with your browser. While you can watch YouTube without ads, these add-ons may prevent you from connecting to the Roblox servers. Therefore, you may want to disable them when playing.
The steps are different on each browser, but you can usually find the option in the Settings menu.
Open Ports
Should your network not be in the supported ports, it’s time to port forward. That way, Roblox can connect and prevent Error Code 279 from happening.
- Log in to your router’s control panel.
- Look for the option to port forward.
- Enter the IP address.
- In the port range, enter “49152-65535.”
- For the protocol, choose UDP.
- Restart your router and check if Roblox is working again.
Turn Your Antivirus Off
Third-party antivirus software can also be extremely sensitive to threats, just like Windows Defender Firewall. You can sometimes experience games being blocked because they were seen as threats. You may want to consider disabling your antivirus software and then playing Roblox to avoid this.
If it works, you’ll have to configure the program so it doesn’t block Roblox from connecting to the servers. That way, you can stay safe from threats while playing Roblox.
Restart Your PC
Sometimes, restarting your computer magically solves problems. This can work for Roblox, though you should reach out to Roblox itself if nothing here works.
No Problem!
When your games malfunction, it’s natural to want to fix them with whatever means are available. Addressing Error Code 279 for Roblox isn’t tricky, and these fixes only take several minutes each. Hopefully, you can connect to the Roblox servers without an issue.
