What to Do When Your Vizio TV Keeps Turning On By Itself

There’s a reason why Vizio TVs are so popular around the world. It’s not just a matter of affordability. They have excellent features and impressive image quality as well.

What to Do When Your Vizio TV Keeps Turning On By Itself

But there’s an issue that might catch you off guard. What if your Vizio TV keeps turning on by itself? Before you start thinking your home is haunted, you should know that it happens sometimes.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. In this article, we’ll cover some of the fixes you can try.

Fixing the Problem

You might be wondering why this happens in the first place? But there’s no need for concern, it doesn’t mean that your Vizio TV is broken. It’s usually something small that’s causing this rather annoying glitch.

And it’s not just Vizio Smart TVs that run into the problem. All the issues and solutions could easily apply to any other type of smart TV. Here’s a list of fixes you can try if your Vizio TV seems to have a mind of its own.

Check the Remote Power Button

Wouldn’t it be funny if it turned out that the power button on your remote was stuck? Funny or not, that’s not an unlikely scenario. It might look stuck, but it might not. The best course of action is to dissemble the remote and give it a good clean.

Take your time, no rush, remove every speck of dust. It’s a smart thing to do even if that’s not the reason your Vizio is turning on by itself.

Check the Remote Batteries

This might seem like a counterintuitive solution, but it makes a lot sense. Here’s why. When the batteries are low, they can fire off random signals in your TV’s direction.

Sometimes, they’ll turn it on. But how can you be sure that it’s time to replace the batteries? Well, if you have to press a button on the remote more than once, that’s a good sign.

Check Connected Devices

There’s a chance that a streaming device is causing the malfunction. A Fire TV Stick or Roku player could be the culprits. To make sure, unplug them for a night, or even for a few days, and see if the problem persists.

There could be some damage in the device’s cord or input, so you might need to replace them. You might also try disabling the HDMI CEC on your Vizio for a while to eliminate all possibilities.

Vizio TV System Settings

If none of the above solutions work, there is another fix you can try. Some Vizio TV users reported that it worked for them, so it’s worth giving it a shot. Follow these steps:

  1. On your Vizio TV home screen select “Settings”.
  2. Scroll down and select “System”.
  3. Next, select “Power mode”.
  4. If your power mode is set to “Eco Mode”, change it to “Quick Start”.

Give it a few days and see if your Vizio will turn on by itself again. And if even that doesn’t work, there’s only one thing left to try.

Reset Your Vizio TV

You might be apprehensive to perform a factory reset on your smart TV, but sometimes that’s the best course of action. Factory resets are last resorts, but they usually fix whatever’s bothering your device, including smart TVs. To reset your Vizio, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Menu from your Vizio remote.
  2. Go to Settings and then System and select OK.
  3. Select “Reset TV to Factory Defaults”.
  4. If you don’t have the parental code, type in 0 0 0 0 when prompted for password.
  5. Select “Reset” and hit OK.
  6. Give your TV time to turn off.

Once the reset process is done, you’ll need to go through the setup again. Keep in mind that any data and settings you had on the Vizio previously will be gone. But hopefully, your Vizio won’t turn on by itself anymore.

In Case Nothing Works

Your Smart TV turning on unexpectedly can be both surprising and annoying. But it shouldn’t be something that keeps happening. If after the factory reset, you’re still experiencing this problem, it’s time to talk to the manufacturer directly.

You can go to Vizio support page and call the toll free number. Alternatively, you could send a text message or chat live with an agent. They might be able to troubleshoot the issue, or you tell you whether you’re eligible for a replacement TV.

Turn On Your TV Only When You Want to

If your Vizio is on most of the time, you might not even notice this problem. But if you like to keep your screen time scheduled, spontaneous power on could be a problem. Fortunately, it might be remedied with a simple fix you can try on your own.

Make sure the batteries are fresh and that the remote isn’t “sticky”. Check the system settings and the power mode. Make sure all the devices and cords are working properly. And follow the factory reset instructions if need be.

Cindy T says:
I have 5 TV’s in the house, and the only 2 turning themselves back on are the smaller Vizio and the 55″ Element, both of which are connected to the Spectrum Cable boxes. The larger Vizio is connected to my Digital Antenna and has no issues with this. We have other problems with the Spectrum Cable boxes like having to reset them by manually removing the power. Spectrum has been out ,multiple times and replaced everything except the Spectrum boxes.
Greg Robbins says:
After speaking with Vizio support I was told that my TV has been trying to get a large update to go through. That was the reason given for my Vizio TV turning on by itself. The tech forced the update to the TV. It has only been one day, but so far the TV has not turned on by itself.
Paul says:
I took the batteries out of my Fire TV remote and it stopped immediately. Thanks for the idea.
Dave says:
Yes, changing from eco mode to quick start worked for me too. But now I have a device that consumes 20+ watts when off vs. .5 watt. Not sure I’m keeping what is essentially a defective product.
Mike says:
Only thing that worked for me was changing to power settings from eco mode to Quick Start. With so many people having this issue would think vizio would do something about it.
