Google has long been one of the leaders in the world of technology, and they keep pushing the boundaries on an almost daily basis. One of the most innovative products they’ve introduced recently is the line of Google Home products. These are smart speakers that utilize voice commands to perform actions. They do so in conjunction with the Google Assistant.
As is the case with all Google products, you need an account to use one. Most people already have a Google account, but many also have multiple accounts –one or more for personal emails and the rest for business correspondence.
What happens if you want to switch accounts on a single Google Home smart speaker? This article will guide you through the whole process of adding, removing, and switching to different Google Accounts on your Google Home device.
Adding Multiple Accounts on Google Home
Before a major update a few years back, Google Home was unable to recognize and identify different voices, so it couldn’t handle multiple accounts. Thankfully, it can now support up to six different voices, each associated with a different Google account, so you don’t have to share the same account for your daily feeds, music playlists, etc.
Recognizing Your Voices
Step 1
Before adding any other Google accounts, you need to make sure that Google Home can recognize your voice without any issues.
You will need to have the Google Home app installed anyway, so if you haven’t done that, download and install it before proceeding. When you open the app, you will have to tap on the so-called hamburger menu located in the top left corner of your screen.
When you get there, simply tap on the button that says “More Settings”.
Step 2
This will take you to the settings page for the Google Assistant. When there, simply scroll all the way down and then tap on the “Shared Devices” button.
Tapping on it will open a list of all the shared devices, if there are any. Click on the plus button, located in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Step 3
The app detects all the connected devices automatically, so you just need to select the device that you want to share and then tap on the “Continue” button.
Step 4
Over here, you will have to tap on the “Get Started” button and teach the Google Assistant to recognize your voice by following the instructions inside the app. As a rule, this involves repeating the phrase “OK Google” into your phone’s mic three or four times in a row. When the process is done, simply tap on “Continue” The Google Assistant should now have no problem recognizing your voice.
Add Multiple Google Accounts
Once you’ve made sure Google Home knows your voice, you can safely add other (up to five) Google accounts. Each user can do this on their own phones if they have the Google Home app installed. If you want to do it all by yourself using your own phone, just follow the steps below.
Step 1
Once again, launch the Google Home app and then head to the hamburger menu in the top left corner of your screen. After that, tap on the little arrow that points downward. You will find it right next to your email address.
Step 2
If there are other users already added on your phone and inside the tab, tapping on their name will allow you to switch to a different account and configure the Google Home device by repeating the voice recognition process described above.
If you want to switch to another account that isn’t added yet, you will have to add it first. To do so, tap on the “Manage Accounts” button, followed by a tap on the “Add account” button.
Step 3
Once you’ve entered all the login data for the given account, you will need to go back to the hamburger menu in the upper left corner and tap on the “More Settings” button.
Step 4
You will now have to repeat the process of adding a shared device following the steps outlined above. When you get to the plus button that adds the devices, you will have to ask the new user to go through the voice command setup.
Once Google Home confirms and recognizes the new voice, simply tap on “Continue”. Switching between two or more accounts is now easy, as you just tap on the little downward arrow which will list all the available accounts.
Conclusion
Following a recent update, multiple users with different accounts can now use Google Home smart speakers and enjoy personalized functionality.
