Vizio TV Won’t Turn On—What to Do?

If your Vizio TV suddenly doesn’t turn on, it can be very frustrating. Buying a new TV can be expensive, and getting it repaired can be costly and time-consuming.

Vizio TV Won’t Turn On—What to Do?

Don’t worry, though. If your Vizio fails to power on, there’s no reason to panic. There are a couple of possible reasons why the scenario occurs, and in most cases, it’s not due to a broken TV. Usually, it just takes a few minutes and some troubleshooting to get your TV back up and running.

What to Do if Your Vizio TV Won’t Turn On

Before we jump into troubleshooting your TV’s problem, we need to determine if it’s getting power or not.

  • It’s simple, check the standby light on your TV to see if it’s on or not. If you see the red indicator light, then that means your TV is in Standby mode. If you see then the blue indicator light and there’s still a black screen, then that means your TV is on but might be on a different input screen or could have an issue with the backlight. If you don’t see a light at all, then that means your TV isn’t receiving power for some reason.

Troubleshooting a Vizio TV that has the Standby Light On

Here are some potential reasons why your Vizio TV won’t turn on even though the standby light is on.

Check the Remote

If you can’t turn on your Vizio TV using a remote, there might not be anything wrong with the TV at all. Instead, the issue might be with the remote.

  • One of the most common issues is that the batteries are dying or they’re already dead. To see if this is the case, try replacing the batteries and turning the TV on again.
  • If there’s still nothing happening, remove the batteries from the remote and press and hold the Power button on your remote for 15 seconds. After pressing the Power button for 15 seconds, reinsert the batteries and try turning the TV on.

Troubleshooting a Vizio TV that has the Standby Light Off

If your TV’s standby light isn’t on, the red light in the corner that’s on even when the TV isn’t, then you most likely have an issue with a lack of power.

Check the Vizio TV’s Power Source

To start, checking the power is the next logical step.

  • The first thing you’ll want to do is see if pressing the Menu button yields any results. Sometimes, the TV is on but displays a blank screen. Both the remote and the TV include a Menu button. Try pressing both buttons (not simultaneously) to see if the menu pops up.
  • If the menu test fails, the TV may indeed be off, and the power source might be an issue. Ensure that your TV is fully plugged into a power outlet before trying to turn it on again.

Check the Condition of the Power Cord

The thing that can often prevent your TV from turning on is a loose or damaged cord. A loose power cord sometimes causes problems for even the most technically savvy among us.

  • To ensure that the cord fits well, check its connection to both the power outlet and the TV, making sure both connections are plugged in. Even a slightly loose power cord connection can interrupt the flow of electricity to your TV, and it’s not always apparent that your TV is unplugged from its power source. See if the cord is correctly plugged into the outlet. A good idea would be to unplug it and then plug it back in to ensure it is secure. Another thing you can try is to plug the cord into another outlet.
  • After you’ve checked the power outlet in the wall, ensure the cord securely connects to the back of the TV. A loose power wire connection happens more often than you might think, especially if you have children or pets that run around the TV or you have a long run to the power strip. Longer runs mean tighter cords that can loosen when rotating the TV or when moving it around. You can always unplug the power cord from the TV and plug it back in to ensure it is fully inserted and secure.

If checking the remote for functionality, testing the TV’s power source (outlet), and inspecting the TV’s power cord don’t solve the problem, there are a few more things you can try to resolve the issue.

Power Cycle Your Vizio TV

If you suspect that you might be having power-related issues, the first solution to try is power cycling your Vizio TV. The process involves using the power button on your TV. Do Vizio TVs have buttons? In short, all buttons are found on the back and vary based on the model or version.

The process of power cycling your Vizio TV is straightforward and goes like this:

  1. Unplug the cord of your TV from the outlet and leave it disconnected.
  2. Locate the power button on the back of your Vizio TV. The buttons blend in well, so you’ll need to look closely.
  3. Press and hold the button on your TV for about 10 seconds to drain any reserve energy.
  4. Try turning on your TV again.

The preceding steps are likely to work in many cases. If none of the procedures work the first time, try again, making sure to hold the power button down for at least 10 seconds each time. Often, this will be enough to fix your TV so that you can get back to relaxing.

Call Vizio Customer Support

If none of the above tips work for you, it might be time to give Vizio customer support a call. They may provide steps for your particular Vizio TV model.

Calling tech support may fix the problem, but there might be some other issues with your TV that you can’t fix yourself.

The Vizio customer support team may be able to help you solve the problem by working with you over the phone or by telling you how to send in your TV for repair.

Replace Internal Components

If you understand electronics and how they work, you can troubleshoot the boards to identify potential power problems.

A Vizio TV that won’t turn on is often caused by a failing power supply board. The most common parts to fail on a power supply board are capacitors, transistors, and diodes.

If the Vizio TV does have proper power outputs, but it appears not to turn on, then the likely culprit is a bad T-Con board. In short, the Timed Controller Board is responsible for relaying signals to the LCD or LED screen. There’s more to it, but that’s the gist.

If you have never disassembled a Vizio TV or any other TV for that matter, it is best to let a certified repair technician handle the repairs for you. Disassembly is very precise, detailed, and a risk to your safety! One wrong move and you could damage the TV or yourself, especially with all those tight and brittle wire connections and high-power circuits.

Note: Servicing your Vizio TV is done at your own risk. Box20 and Alphr.com are not responsible for any actions or outcomes pursued by the user. Your actions can lead to electrical damage and possibly electrical shock!

Vizio TVs and the Power of Troubleshooting

Knowing what something isn’t doing, a TV not turning on in this case, is important in determining what the problem is. From there, you identify the reasons why the problem would arise. As you probably already know, start with the solutions and then go to the more advanced ones.

Sam says:
Got this TV from my mom yesterday and plugged it into my computer via HDMI and was working fine at first. Then after about an hour there was a flash and the display turned off. After unplugging and replugging everything, at first the computer still seemed to recognize there was a 2nd display attached and the light on the bottom where it says VIZIO would turn orange when I plugged it in, but the screen remained blank and I was unable to access the menu. Today, the orange light on VIZIO doesn’t even light up anymore when plugged in and the computer doesn’t seem to recognize it is plugged into a display when I plug it in either (no mirroring options come up.) Is this computer toast? This is so confusing to me because it was working fine for an hour after I got it and all of a sudden nothing. Have tried multiple plugs and multiple power outlets and the outlet I am using seems to provide power to other things. Not sure what else I can do besides potentially opening it up and I doubt I want to buy replacement parts on a TV this old
Steve Larner says:
My guess is that the TV failed–most likely the power supply. A power supply can still work but fail in certain aspects, such as certain power outputs to specific boards. The moving of older TVs or any electronics risks the potential for failure. I’ve had that with game consoles and PCs.

My Vizio turns on and just shows the logo but that’s about it. It won’t do anything else. What should I do?

i have a 32 inch Vizio tv it turns on and can watch for as long as i want. the trouble is when i turn it off it wont turn back on for at least 20 min after i unplug the tv.

My m50 is 6-7 years old. It will not power up. Troubleshot and its the power supply. They cost 24 bucks. Easy fix, easy to take apart. Most of the boards on these TVs are dirt cheap, easy to get to and replace. If it powers and you do not get video through say an HDMI port, its usually the main board. Most of the time if it just does not power, its the power supply…..

I’m giving up on my Vizio. The not turning on thing began about a month ago. The set is about 2 years old. I’m sick of holding my breath, waiting to see if it will or will not turn on each time. I’m sick of doing the reset procedure. I checked out Consumer Reports brand rating & Vizio was last. Didn’t used to be that way.She

I bought a Vizio M550NV in 2010 and it worked fine until a few nights ago. I was flipping through the channels and the screen went black. I tried resetting it with all that I read on here and nothing has worked. The VIZIO logo on the front of the tv stays yellow and it will not turn on no matter what I have tried to do. The only “power” button that I found was a silver button on the back left hand side of the tv. Any help would be appreciated. I am so close to throwing this thing out and purchasing another brand. This is aggrivating to say the least.
Carol says:
The same thing happened to me and my husband just the other week. Its a different model than yours, but, when the TV would not turn on with the remote or the knob on the back of the TV I decided to buy another remote. When I got the new remote, I added batteries to the remote and it turned the tv on. When I attempted to turn the tv with the other remote I noticed the light turning on (VIZIO) on the bottom of the tv even though there was no picture or sound which is why I thought about just trying a new remote for it. I hope this information helps someone.

TECHjunkie you da’ bomb! Last night turned tv off, everything was fine, but during a wicked thunderstorm. This am would not turn off with the remote OR the side tv button. Same problem of the black screen. We had a TV repairman come two months ago. Of course it magically worked when he was here. Was fine again until a few weeks ago. Then it started turning itself off again. Today, it turned off and won’t come back on like it was doing a few months ago when we called the repairman. Power cycling doesn’t seem to work. It’s 2 1/2 years old. TVs should last longer than this. With quarantine, no one is coming to fix it any time soon. If anyone has any other suggestions, let me know!

HELP – my E422Va will not turn on. I have replaced the power board. I have replaced the min board – twice. the parts company sent me a second board in case the first was not good. i have the dim power light on. it does not change when pushing the power button.i have done the power cycle thing more than a dozen times. i have a rock solid 5.2V STBY. there is no change to the on signal from main board to power board when pushing on button. disconnected the power board connector form main board. shorteed 5V pin to on pin. This caused the backlight to flash on off on off on off, but did not turn on. i need some serious direction on where to turn next oh honorable tech junkie…

I’m having the same problem as everyone. Change batteries in remote, did power check. Still power light comes on 2 sec. goes out and nothing. Do I need a tv repairman if ther is such a person?
Bob Hardy says:
I have an older vizio tv, when you turn it on it only stays on for a couple seconds and goes right off. I have gone through all the
steps mentioned but no difference. Oddly enough I can turn it on with the remote, but can not turn it on with the button on
the tv. I have tried multiple outlets and all with the same result.
Anne says:
I had horrible problems with our 6 month old Vizio. It came on in the middle of the night, changed inputs on its own, lost volume etc. After many lengthy service phone calls, I decided to change the batteries on the remote that comes with the TV. Miraculously I have had no problems since. Someone suggested the infrared of the battery in the remote was talking to the tv so it was cycling on its own. Go figure.
Rudy says:
Hey Jennifer my tv is doing the same exact thing. No picture or sound and the light comes on for a few seconds and then it fades away. I’m thinking maybe the power supply board needs top be replaced Did you get yours working? Any info is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Kay says:
Mine is doing exactly the same thing. Working fine then turned off when I left for a couple hours now won’t come back on. Did everything with power that was posted and new batteries but light comes on power and then goes back off
Ed says:
My vizio tv is doing exactly the same thing.
Did you get yours fixed ?
Was it the main power board ?
renovater says:
besides doing a power cycle, I have also turned the tv on (got no picture or sound) then I pressed the input button and scanned through this menu a time or two, stopped at the tv input, tv came on! don’t know why, but it did it.
Bubba74 says:
Having same issue. Did you find any comments on how to fix?
Marina Alba says:
I red alot of comments about this vizio tv and it seems that they are good for about one year after warranty doesn’t cover. I have same problem, the light turns on but tv doesn’t work. Very disappointed!!!
renovater says:
my 50″,(brand new) was not coming on, sometimes a brief sound would emerge for about 1 second, then disappear. I did the power cycle and it worked! tv came right on.
disconnect power cord from wall. hold down ON button (I used the one on the back of tv) for 10 seconds, plug tv back again. turn on. make sure you hold button for a good 10 seconds.( I have not shut if off yet, to see if it comes on again.)
Giselle says:
My Vizio turns on and just shows the logo but that’s about it. It won’t do anything else. What should I do?

That is a different problem. This thread is about when the screen remains black when you power on.

Giselle, did you ever get your TV to work again? Mine is doing the exact same thing turning on showing the Vizio logo and then goes black but the power button light stays on just looking for some help please share in your wisdom you might have thank you

my new TV worked great for the first month, now it will not turn on. Tried to do the power recycle on numerous occasions to no avail. All cables/wires are plugged in correctly.
Dorothy K Morris says:
My remote has new batteries. I have to hold the button down for a very long time before the TV turns on. When it is on, channels change easily and quickly. Then turning it off takes another long time. Don’t think is the remote and tv works fine after it finally comes on. What could be the problem?
Joel says:
All of the advice doesn’t work. Does that mean tv is bad?
Drakkar says:
i have the same issue… bought it in 2018. its 2019 and they said its no longer under warranty

My Vizio’s screen is black, the white light in the lower left corner works (showing that it’s on) but the screen is black.
Jennifer says:
Same thing just happened to me. What did you do? I have tried to reset it and everything they recommend. Nothing – just the white light at the bottom of the left lower part of TV for about 2-3 seconds and then blank.
