If you’d rather using a browser to access messaging apps like GroupMe, you can sign up for an account at their official site. Use your email address, Microsoft, or Facebook account. For U.S. users, you can add your cellphone number to send and receive SMS via GroupMe.

You will need to verify your phone number with the PIN sent to your phone. This is the final step in the signup process. Now you can move on to messaging.

Sending Messages to a Group on GroupMe

There are several ways to send a message in GroupMe, but the most common way is in a Group. Whether you already have a group or you need to create one, we’ll start by showing you how to create your own group.

To create a group in GroupMe, do this:

1. Sign in to your account or open the mobile app.
   
2. Tap on the blue message icon with a plus symbol inside it (at the bottom of your screen).
   
3. Choose Start Group.
   
4. Enter the name of the group.
   
5. Tap on the checkmark in the upper right-hand corner.
   
6. You will get a pop-up telling you to add group members. Enter an account name in the field below to find somebody (enter their email address or their phone number in case they aren’t on GroupMe yet). You can add multiple people at once, just click on Add’ ‘x” members at the bottom of your screen.
   
7. Once you have added the group members, you can finally start sending messages. Simply tap on the Send Message field at the bottom and type out your message.
   

How to Send Group SMS Using GroupMe

Unfortunately, the group SMS feature is region locked to America only. This is a great feature for anyone who does not have a smartphone or access to the app. Keep in mind that data and message rates may apply.

#help – For receiving a text with a list of every command

#new – For creating a new group linked to a specific phone number

Here is a list of commands you can text to the phone number of your group:

1. #topic – to change the name of the group
2. #add [name] [number] – to add a new group member
3. #mute or #unmute – to block or unblock group notifications
4. #remove [name or number] – to remove a group member
5. #name [name] – to change your nickname
6. #list – to receive a list of every group member
7. #exit – to leave the group

How to Send a DM on GroupMe

Sometimes you don’t want all the group members to read your message. If you want to send a private message on GroupMe, follow the next steps:

1. Open GroupMe on your browser or app.
   
2. Tap the “Menu” icon at the bottom right of the app.
   
3. Select Contacts from the main screen.
   
4. Choose the person you want to direct message.
   
5. Type in the message and press send.
   

You can also send a private message to a group member within the group:

1. Open GroupMe on the app or browser.
   
2. Choose the avatar of the desired group.
   
3. Click on Members.
   
4. Choose the avatar of the person you want to message.
   
5. Click on Send direct message and it will open a separate one-on-one chat with them.
   

Users of SMS messaging are out of luck because they can’t send private messages on GroupMe.
