Amazon Echo Show is probably the most convenient way to prepare meals while following recipes. With a few simple voice commands, you can load your favorite meal and seamlessly follow the on-screen instructions. Furthermore, it comes with a bunch of other features that passionate cooks will adore.
But can you send recipes to Echo Show, or can you only use those that the device can find online? Well, there’s a way to display custom recipes using a certain Alexa skill. If you want to learn how; keep reading this article.
Set Up Allrecipes
The best way to display recipes on the Amazon Echo Show is with the help of the Allrecipes ‘skill.’ The Allrecipes database features over 60,000 tried and tested, easy to follow recipes. Moreover, this is the best way to add your custom recipe to the database and display it in the Echo.
Allrecipes will have plenty of features that are specially made for the Amazon Echo series. If unsure of what to make for lunch or dinner, you can ask Allrecipes to recommend certain meals based on the ingredients you have at home or the time necessary to make it. Additionally, it can send a list of necessary ingredients to your phone so you don’t have to type them out.
Follow these instructions to add the Allrecipes skill to your Amazon Alexa system and Echo Show:
- Get the Alexa app from Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS)
- Launch the app and log into your account.
- Press your user profile icon at the top left of the screen.
- Tap the ‘Skills’ tab from the side menu.
- Enable ‘Allrecipes’
- Link your account by typing in your credentials or via Facebook or Google Plus. This will connect your Allrecipes with all your accounts, including Echo Show.
Once you’ve set up the skill, you can display any recipe on your Amazon Echo. If you want to send your own recipe, you need to add it to the database first. You’ll learn how to do it in the following section.
Adding Your Own Recipe to Allrecipes Database
The most efficient way to send your own recipe to the Echo Show is to add it to the Allrecipes database first. This way you can add a step-by-step guide that you can easily follow while preparing it and include all necessary ingredients.
This is how you do it:
- Go to the Allrecipes
- Click on the profile icon on the top-right and sign in to your account. If you don’t have one, you can create it or sign in via Google or Facebook.
- Click on your profile icon again.
- Select ‘Personal Recipes’ tab from your profile screen.
- Click ‘Add recipe.’
- Fill in all the blanks accordingly. You need to add a recipe title, short description, and even the preparation time and a nice photo of the meal.
- Choose whether you’d like your recipe to be private or public. If you choose your recipe to be private, you can still display it on the Echo Show if you’re connected to your account.
- When you’re done, just accept the terms and services and click the ‘Save’ button.
Your recipe will be stored in the database and you can easily screen it on the Echo Show. Make sure you add a unique and accurate title for your recipe as it will be much easier for Alexa to display it the first time you look for it. Now the only thing that’s left to do is displaying the photo.
Displaying Your Recipe on Amazon Echo
The Echo Show can display any recipe with a simple Alexa voice command. That’s why you should try to be as specific as possible if you’re searching for the recipe that you’ve submitted.
For example, if you’re looking for the recipe for noodles, just say: “Alexa, show me the recipe for noodles”. Besides the recipes from the Allrecipes database, you may see recipes that Alexa found online. Note: those from Allrecipes will have the Allrecipes icon at the bottom left.
If you want to display only recipes from Allrecipes, you should say the command: “Alexa, ask Allrecipes for a quick Tacos recipe”. This will only display Allrecipes recipe from the database that takes the least time to prepare.
Of course, you can browse through the recipes until you find the one that suits you or until you reach your own. If you named your recipe in a specific way, such as “Lasagna with olives and cherry tomatoes”, you’ll find it much easier if you say the full title name instead of just “Lasagna”.
Another quick, alternative way to display your recipe on Echo Show is to say: “Alexa show my Allrecipes personal recipes”, and you’ll get all recipes that you’ve submitted. Just choose the one that you want to prepare, and you can start cooking right away.
Food Network
Foodies and Amazon subscribers rejoiced when Food Network joined the team. At the time of writing, Food Network is offering a free year of the Premium subscription service that offers recipes and cooking classes.
Just as we did with the AllRecipes instructions above, add the Food Network Skill to your Echo Show. Next, set the app on your phone. Scroll through the list of available recipes and save them to your account.
Unlike AllRecipes, you can’t add your own recipes as of yet. But, you can tell Alexa to give you a “chicken recipe from the Food Network app.” Your Echo Show will display the recipe, helpful hints, and even some videos to you hope prepare the perfect meal.
Cook Without Obstacles
Thanks to Echo Show you can cook without the need to wipe or wash your hands. Therefore, you can turn the page of the recipe, or scroll down on your touchscreen display. Thanks to the voice command, you can smoothly go over each step and just command Alexa to switch to the next one when required.
On top of that, you can share your own specialities with tens of thousands of Echo Show users in the same position as you.
